PlayStation 25th Anniversary: Sony Celebrates Birthday Ahead Of PS5 Release

Hurray! A giant in the gaming community is 25 years old. Happy birthday, PlayStation. Not until 25 years ago, the gaming industry witnessed a slow growth process until Sony entered the industry, and since then, it has never remained the same. From a humble beginning on December 3, 1994, it started in Japan with the vision to elevate video games, make it a good game that yields enjoyment for anyone, and an opportunity for developers to exploit their creativity. Today, the brand has grown into a billion-dollar business and the first ever to sell over 100 million units of games consoles globally.

It’s hard to deny the fact that Sony introduced significant advancement to the gaming industry. From the twin-stick design of the DualShock Controller to the PS2 DVD storage compatibility, there is nothing left behind by this gaming giant. To date, Sony boasts of some of the biggest franchises in the video game. Standing firm over the years, the brand has witnessed several console makers come and gone like a flash. PlayStation has remained steady and enjoyed continued growth for 25 years.

Twenty-five years is a long time, and the ability for any brand to achieve such a remarkable feat in the gaming industry is worthy of commendation. Let’s explore the impact this gaming giant had on the industry in the past decades. Thus, we need to take a brief look at its history.

How It All Began – The History

After its launched on December 3, 1994, PlayStation positioned itself as a first liner in the gaming market and one of the best consoles you probably have seen. For instance, the PS1 was released with some of the best games of all time, such as Resident Evil 2, Tekken 3, and several others.

Until the year 2000, when the slim version of the console was launched, the original version of the console was bulky. The thin version further spurns Sony as a reputable brand that understands the needs of gamers and promoted gaming console portability.

PlayStation pioneered wireless controllers and social gaming networks into the industry. March 2000 saw the release of PS2, which to date, is the highest-selling game console of all time with total global sales of 155 million copies. PS3 was released afterwards in November 2006 with some unique features that made it a better option than the previous versions. These features include a wireless controller, external memory cards, as well as social media platform integration.

Unlike the PS Vita, which was launched in 2011 and discontinued in 2019, the PS3 recorded high sales in the gaming market, probably because it was the first to integrate social media platforms into gaming consoles. For the PS Visa, prior to its discontinuation, it recorded a global sale of 20 million copies.

The PS 4 was announced in February 2013 and released in November the same year. Ever since it has managed to sell an estimated 100 million copies globally. Even while gamers are still in love with this magic console, Sony has announced that the PS4 has nearly gotten to the end of its life cycle after just six years of its existence. This means both bad news and good news for game enthusiasts. While most gamers are finding it hard to let go of their PS4 console, others are in deep anticipation of PS5. For these ones, PlayStation has a better offer for them in 2020.

That’s not all; Sony also went ahead to reveal some of the enticing features of the powerful console, giving gamers a glimpse of what they should probably expect next year. According to news, the PS5 is designed to support backward compatibility with PS4 games. Another good news for PS4 fans, your favourite console wouldn’t be a waste after the launch of this new machine.

There is more to the PS5 controller than you probably think with its adaptive triggers designed to provide a realistic feel of the gaming environment, movements, and resistances. With the PS5 rolling out, we should expect better games, improved captions, audio, and other gaming features. More so, there will be better load speed and efficiency, while games will take up lesser space than previous versions.

Happy birthday, PlayStation!
