iPhone 14 Features Roundup

iPhone 14 Features Roundup

Apple has finally unleashed its latest version of iOS smartphones–the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. And as expected, they’re causing quite the buzz. Released alongside the more expensive iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the smartphones bring new updates to their cameras and introduce safety features like car-crash detection.

The new iPhones come in five color choices, including Starlight, Midnight, Blue, Purple, and Product Red. But we couldn’t help but notice the uniqueness of the purple color, which changes depending on the lighting it’s exposed to.

But before you can rush to buy this iPhone, you need to understand its offerings. In this article, we will zero in on all the features this next-generation iPhone brings to the table to help you decide if it’s the right device for you.

Overall Design

Apple didn’t put too much effort into updating iPhone 14’s design. It basically mirrors the iPhone 13 models. Like its predecessor, iPhone 14 includes a ceramic-shield front cover for protection against bumps and drops.

Its body is still held together with a smooth aerospace-aluminum chassis. The speaker grill, microphone, and button placement remain in the same position as in iPhone 13. The camera mode with a diagonal layout remains unchanged and both share the same placement for the large power button and silence slider.

On a positive note, the premium models, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, come in at 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches, respectively. They also rock the new Dynamic Island that houses display information and TrueDepth.

Another notable design change is the lack of a physical SIM Slot. The iPhone 14 sports an all-eSIM (embedded SIM) system. That means users can now get rid of physical SIM cards and sign up for multiple phone plans with ease.

iPhone 14 Features

1. Bright Displays

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus uses Supper Retina XDR OLED display. This allows the smartphone to go up to 1200 nits peak brightness. The iPhone 14 Pros and iPhone 14 Pro Max can reach up to 1,600 nits, and a peak of 2,000 nits for outdoor use.

In addition, the devices include a claimed contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 and True Tone support to balance the display’s white balance with the lighting in a room.

While the iPhone 14 still comes with 2532 X 1170-pixel resolution at 460 ppi, it’s equipped with Dolby Vision. The base models of the iPh.one 14 don’t support ProMotion display technology. The feature is once again limited to the Pro Models.

2. Always-On Display

Another big change to the screen worth noting is that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max boast an always-on display feature. The feature allows the smartphones to show notifications and display live activities, time and widgets even when you turn off the screen or lock the device.

The always-on display is coupled with new LTPO panels, which scale down the refresh rate from 120Hz to 1hz, helps to save battery life.

3. Dynamic Island

Let’s not forget that the infamous iPhone notch is gone. Although the iPhone 14’s base models still have it, the Pro models have replaced its Dynamic Island. This pill-shaped standalone cutout is surrounded by pixels that expand and shrink to match different tasks.

Dynamic Island houses ongoing background tasks that users might need to come back to while using other apps or doing other things on their devices. Multiple apps can also send smaller and less obtrusive notifications to the cutout.

4. A16 Bionic Processor

Sadly, people will not enjoy the latest silicon for the iPhone 14 models. The smartphones use the same A15 Bionic chip from the 2021 iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.

But keep in mind that this 6-core CPU, 5-core GPU, and 16-core Neutral Engine chip is one of the leading mobile chips in the industry and delivers great performance on a variety of tasks. Furthermore, Apple says the A15 Bionic boasts an updated internal design that contributes to improved thermal performance.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will get the A16 Bionic chip that includes nearly 16 billion transistors. Built on a 4-nanometer processor, the A16 Bionic chips use 6- CPU cores for increased performance and efficient battery use.

5. Upgraded Cameras

For photos and videos, the iPhone 14 uses three cameras: The 12-megapixels wide and 12-megapixels UltraWide camera on the back, plus the 12-megapixel TrueDepth front camera.

According to Apple, the 12 MP wide camera got updated with a large sensor, an f/q 1.5 aperture, and larger 1.9 µm pixels for better performance under low light. Plus, it includes sensor-shift optical stabilisation.

The UltraWide camera didn’t received any upgrades, but the front TrueDepth camera now features a faster f/1.9 aperture lens. Plus, it supports autofocus when taking selfies and front-facing shots.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max main camera have 48 megapixels. It also features a quad-pixel sensor, which adapts to your photos. When shooting in ProRaw, the sensor will merge four pixels into a large pixel, resulting in better low-light capture and maintaining the picture size at 12MP.

Besides, the quad-pixel sensor enables a 2x Telephoto option so users can capture full-resolution photos and 4k videos without digital zoom.

6. Photonic Engine Image Processing Technology

The iPhone 14’s cameras use a new photography technology called Photonic Engie to process photos. The technology improves low-light performance up to 2.5x on the Wide camera, 2x on the UltraWide camera, and 2x on the TrueDepth Camera.

Using a combination of software, hardware, and machine language, this technology provides clear details while preserving subtle textures and increasing image quality.

7. Action Mode and Cinematic Modes for Video

Usually, if you wish to record smooth videos, you need a gimble stabiliser. But iPhone 14 address this problem by introducing the Action Mode for videos, which works on up to 2.8 k resolution at 60 fps.

The mode uses a sensor-shift optical image stabilisation sensor to adjust to shakes, motion, and vibrations on the fly. As a result, you can take videos free from bumps. What’s even better, it works with Dolby Vision HDR.

The tech giant also improved the Cinematic Mode and now it’s available in 4K HDR at 24 fps and 30 fps.

8. True Tonal Flash

All iPhone 14 models feature an upgraded True Tone Flash that’s 10% brighter than previous generations and delivers improved lighting uniformity in backgrounds and foregrounds.

However, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max get the Adaptive True Tone Flash, a flash system that adjusts to nine LEDs’ intensity and patterns based on the focal length of an image.

The combination of larger lenses, advanced image processing software, and new flash ensures you can capture 2x improved low-lit images on the Wide camera and 3x on the UltraWide camera.

9. Car Crash Detection

Like the new Apple Watch 8 Models, the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max include a built car crash detection system.

The system is powered by a new dual-core accelerator that can measure up to 256 G-forces and high dynamic range gyroscope help to identify vehicle impacts.

When these sensors detect a serious car crash and the user can’t reach for the iPhone, the Crash detection feature automatically contacts emergency services.

Apple also included other sensors on the smartphone to power the feature, like the barometer (detects changes in cabin pressure), the GPS (watches changes in speed), and the microphone (listens for loud crashing sounds).

Sure! It sounds scary that Apple can use a microphone to listen to sounds associated with car crashes, but remember, these sensors only turn on when you’re driving. And Apple only collects data on sound levels and uses it on your device. After the crash, the data gets wiped off.

10. Emergency SOS Via Satellite

Besides Car Detection, Apple also introduced a new subscription service for iPhone 14 that allows users to make Emergency SOS calls even when they don’t have Wi-Fi or cellular service. Featuring built-in antennas, the iPhone 14 can connect to satellites above you, allowing you to send your location to emergency services back on Earth.

The smartphone will guide you to nearby satellites to get a connection and will help you stay on its path while using the Emergency SOS service. But since satellites are constantly moving and work in areas with few trees, it might take a few minutes before your message can reach any emergency services station.

Once connected, the device will ask you a few questions about your state, like Are you alone or are you lost? Your answers will get sent to trained Apple staff who will contact the relevant emergency personnel for help. You can also send messages directly to emergency services, especially those that support SMS requests.

For non-emergency situations, you can use iPhone 14’s satellite connectivity to share your location with family and friends in Find MY app. This can come in handy when hiking or camping and there’s no cell and internet range.

Apple offers the subscription service to iPhone 14 buyers for free for two years in the U.S and Canada.

Closing Thoughts

That’s all on iPhone 14 features. From the article, it’s clear iPhone 14 base and top-tier models have more to offer than their predecessors. From satellite connectivity to crash detection and True Depth Camera to Dynamic Island, iPhone 14 promises performance and experience like no other.

With that in mind, we hope you now have all the information you need to decide whether the iPhone 14 is the smartphone for your needs.
