Apple Is Reportedly Working On A Touchscreen MacBook Pro

Is Apple Creating A MacBook Pro With A Touchscreen? While Apple’s smartphones and tablets have focused on the use of touch displays since their initial launch, the same cannot be said for the range of MacBooks and other computing devices offered by the company. That is, up until now, as recent reports suggest that we might see the very first MacBook Pro feature a touchscreen by the year 2025. We take a closer look at these reports and what we may expect in this post.

Touchscreen Features And The MacBook Pro

Laptops with touch displays are nothing new in the modern day. Many companies have taken it upon themselves to implement touch functionality in laptops, a feature that we’ve grown used to in smartphones and tablets. Several of these laptops even come with detachable keyboards that allow you to easily convert it from a laptop to a powerful handheld tablet while still holding enough power to run Windows or Linux operating systems smoothly.

The same cannot be said for Apple, as the company has refrained from the use of a touchscreen in their laptops, known as the MacBook.

Throughout the past few years, Apple’s representatives have spoken about the use of a touchscreen in a laptop device. Steve Jobs announced that touch displays should not be vertical, as it would essentially lead to the development of fatigue in the user’s arm. At the time, this was noted as a reason for not introducing a MacBook or MacBook Pro that has a touchscreen. Later on, in 2021, John Ternus also mentioned that the macOS operating system, along with the design of the MacBook itself, was solely made to handle indirect input. He mentioned that at the time, Apple did not have any reason to make a change to how their computing devices were optimized. In the same speech, John mentioned that the idea behind the iPad was to create a portable computing device that would feature a touchscreen. Yet, there remain some limitations when it comes to the use of iPadOS, especially when you compare its functions to macOS.

Reports About Apple Introducing A New Touchscreen MacBook Pro

Even though Steve Jobs made it clear that the use of a touch display on a MacBook would be a “terrible” idea, the company seems to have taken a turn on their opinion about this particular feature. In recent reports, it has been revealed that Apple seems to be working on implementing touchscreen functionality to a MacBook Pro.

The MacBook Pro remains one of the more popular laptop options from the brand, particularly due to its powerful specifications and stylish design. Combined with the latest features from the macOS, these devices are great for creatives, professionals, and gamers alike. Up until now, however, indirect input in the form of moving the mouse pad and typing on the keyboard was the option used to control the operating system, play games, and utilise other functions.

According to reports, the engineers at Apple are currently hard at work on a project that would introduce touch functionality to their MacBook. Very little is currently known about this new project that is in the works, but it has been made clear that the new laptop will not be released anytime soon. As with other new technologies that Apple introduces, they often ensure quality does not lack and aim to produce devices that work exactly as the user expects them to. Thus, the engineers are sure to take some time in order to perfect a model of the MacBook Pro that will work with this OLED touchscreen.

The touch functionality will likely only be seen on the Pro model of the MacBook range and not the lower-end options. This is likely due to the fact that the most powerful hardware is added to the Pro models.

Experts believe that we will likely see this new touchscreen MacBook Pro launch in 2025, as the company is still working on the idea and might have updates on it in the upcoming two years surrounding the project.

Conclusion

A new OLED display MacBook Pro set to launch in 2025 might have touch functionality in its display, according to new reports. The laptop is expected to run on the macOS operating system, which does mean the OS will need to be altered by Apple to support the new touch display. More news will likely surface in the near future to explain more about what we can expect from a MacBook Pro with a touchscreen.
